Caspar Pearson of the Warburg Institute looks at the Sassetti Chapel in Santa Trinita, Florence, frescoed by the Ghirlandaio workshop in 1483–85, whose scenes from the life of St Francis include views of fifteenth-century Florence and portraits of living people. He explores the interpretive puzzles these paintings raise and how they may reflect on the act of interpretation itself.
