Katayoun Shafiee of the University of Warwick examines how World Bank–financed dam building on the Dez River in southwest Iran in the mid-20th century drew foreign agencies, American firms and international lenders into large-scale planning. She argues that calculating tools such as cost-benefit analysis and soil science turned the region’s land, water and farmers into objects of investment, limiting local people’s capacity to act. Part of the Mossavar-Rahmani Seminar Series; free and open to the public.
