Beate Fricke of the University of Bern looks at the halls built between 1300 and 1500 in port cities from Valencia and Palma to Ypres and Tunis, where trade, credit, law and taxation shared one roof. She argues that their striking forms—spiral columns, open-well stairs and grove-like vaults—are best explained by the functions they housed and the goods traded there, above all silk, and reads the gaps in the surviving records as evidence.
