Subtitled Painting, Race, and Belonging in Nineteenth-Century France, this focused exhibition explores how French ideas of race and identity shaped the making and reception of Édouard Manet's Bohémienne, a painting of a woman of color leaning against a horse that was found in his studio at his death. It shows the Museum's painting alongside works by Jacques Callot, Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Edgar Degas. On view January 31–May 31, 2027; free.
